SURGE PHENOMENON AND MINUTE FAULT ANALYSIS DURING IMPULSE TESTING OF TRANSFORMER

ABSTRACT: Transformer is a major component of the power system. In EHV and UHV class equipment, the design and testing of the insulation should be given highest priority. This paper deals with surge voltage distribution across the winding by considering various values of a ratio between shunt capacitance to a series capacitance of the winding under neutral grounded and neutral isolated conditions. It also describes surge voltage distribution in the winding at different instants of time. Later, it presents impulse test connections for general winding configurations and also describes the analysis of the minute faults occurred during an impulse test.
